The world relies on a variety of energy sources. In 2018, fossil fuels, such as oil, gas and coal, accounted for over 81 percent of the energy consumed. Renewable energy sources like solar energy, wind power biomass, hydroelectricity and biomass comprise 14 percent. Nuclear energy is another 5 percent. Different countries have different energy sources to balance the needs of their economy and environmental concerns.
Nature provides energy in many forms: sun, wind, waves and ocean. When harnessed, and transformed into more convenient forms of energy, such as heat or electricity, these are known as primary sources. When these energy sources are used up, they become nonrenewable energy sources.
The environment is harmed by many fossil fuels as well as some other energy sources that aren’t renewable. For instance, oil mining can cause the destruction of our forest ecosystems of the planet. Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) can cause earthquakes and water pollution. Carbon dioxide is released when coal is burnt, which contributes to global warming.
Fortunately, a majority of the most promising sources of energy are sustainable and renewable. Solar, wind and hydropower, for example, generate electricity without having to dig up new sources.

But, in order to be used in a large-scale manner these technologies need effective distribution networks. They must be constructed, which requires the use of non-renewable energy sources. In the end, these sources aren’t enough to supply the majority of our energy needs. But it’s important keep in mind that costs for renewable energy equipment have come down drastically over the last couple of years, and efficiency is growing quickly.
